Sweet news, Super Bowl commercial fans! Snickers is going to air its first Big Game ad since 2011! During that year’s game, Super Bowl XLV (the Packers managed to best the Steelers that year, FYI. It was a good game for once), the candy bar went big with its successful – and extremely accurate – “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign, enlisting some major celebrities.
For Super Bowl XLIX, they are sticking with the same “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” tagline, and we’re willing to bet they are also going to stick with humor for their next Super Bowl commercial. After all, humor has long been the mainstay of Snickers Super Bowl commercials. First let’s watch this charming ad from 1996’s Big Game. Remember the Kansas City Chefs spot? With the field painter muttering “Great Googaly Moogaly?” A fine ad; indeed it’s almost a classic:
Next let’s check out their spot from 2007’s Super Bowl titled “Manly”:
Ouch. But moderately funny.
As (moderately) funny as the “Manly” spot was, it had nothing on the Super Bowl commercial campaign blitz the company would run during Super Bowls back in 2010 and 2011. That series of spots featured major celebrities ranging from Aretha Franklin to Liza Minnelli to Betty White standing in for regular old people who just happened to be hungry.
Each of these ads is a gem, and taken as a whole, this is what a great advertising campaign looks like. Will this year’s Snickers Super Bowl spot live up to these? Frankly we hope they go with the exact same joke premise and use some hilarious famous folks – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
