Best Tech Superbowl Commercials
January 18, 2010
8. Computer.com, 2000 -- Mike & Mike
A cute commercial, it makes our list because it brings us back to a simpler, happier time. When you could start a business with your parent’s hard-earned money, make millions yourself, spend the millions wildly, then lose everything you owned and move back into their basement.
Ahh, memories.
Sadly, Computer.com went the way of Pets.com — that is, it slowly died in its sleep. What happened to Mike and Mike? We’re not sure. But some say if you enter the Apple headquarters on a full moon, you can still hear their anguished cries of failure.
7. Iomega, 1998 -- Zip Drive
Sometime in, oh, ‘95 perhaps, we looked at our shiny new computer and thought — a 100 MB hard drive?! How are we ever going to fill all this space up?! Fact is, aside from Nibbles (the old Snake) and that game where you shot at your enemies’ tower with your colorfully drawn tank by entering coordinates, there wasn’t much else fill the space up with.
The Iomega 100 MB Zip Disk commercial is just plain ol’ adorable — from the technologically advanced camera disappearing trickery in the video to the fact that the thing costs $150 (oh god what?!) – it’s a wonder to look back to a time not too long ago and see how far we’ve gone.
After all, we have an $18, 4 GB memory stick and we have no doubt that in 10 years, we’ll easily have an $18 4TB memory stick, and frankly, we’re wowed by that.
Like this. Wow.
