Honda – 2012 – Matthew’s Day Off

honda

Honda has gifted us with a magnificent treasure this day, providing an extended version of their Super Bowl XLVI commercial featuring Matthew Broderick in an inspiring homage to his breakthrough role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. As a point of reference, if they were to air the entire 2-and-a-half minute version on Sunday, it would cost them 17.5 million dollars in airtime alone.

NFL – 2012 – NFL Timeline

nfl

It’s amazing to think how this game, that reaches tens of millions throughout the world and has pumped billions (trillions?) into the economy over the years, started as just some guys throwing a ball around and tackling each other. Question: why is the NFL advertising during the Super Bowl?

Bridgestone – 2012 – Performance Basketball

bridgestone-logo

Bridgestone is putting out the most intelligent, witty commercials of the game. This and the others start off so low-key that most are likely to think it’s a good time to take a pee break, but the sight of the silent-dribbling basketball is funnier than anything we’ve seen all day.

Budweiser – 2012 – Eternal Optimism

Bud takes an almost Coke-like route with this spot, placing Budweiser at the epicenter of great moments throughout American history. What we love is the positive message and the unbridled joy in each of these vignettes, and the music is infectious. Almost makes us want to drink a Bud.

Acura – 2012 – Transactions

Jerry Seinfeld stars in what is possibly one of the best and funniest Super Bowl commercials ever presented. In this extended version we tend to lose the fact that it’s supposed to be a commercial for, you know, the car, but we can’t complain about getting two minutes of Jerry Seinfeld.

Century 21 – 2012 – Century 21 Agents

century 21

A cavalcade of stars you had forgotten about or wished you had forgotten about help show why Century 21 agents are the best. None of these vignettes really hits its mark, though we grudgingly admit that the Donald Trump one was the funniest. Hasn’t that guy already had like 12 do-overs?

Dannon Oikos – 2012 – The Tease

Print

Greek yogurt truly is the best yogurt on the planet, and John Stamos is arguably the best Greek on the planet. We admit to getting weak in the knees in his presence, but not even John Stamos can come between this woman and her Oikos.

Coke – 2012 – Arghh

coke

The bears are back, doing things that people do but it’s funny and cute because they’re polar bears, get it? Seriously Coke, what are we doing here? Do you have anything more to offer us than these poorly-rendered CGI bears wandering the polar wastelands feeling sorry for themselves?

Toyota – 2012 – Reinvented

toyota

Toyota reinvents the Camry, and decides to keep on going and reinvent everything else in our lives. The reinvented couch pretty much sold us right off the bat, though it’s a bit unclear where we’re supposed to sit. And what can you possibly do with a time-traveling baby?

FIAT 500 Abarth – 2012 – Seduction

fiat

Okay, so are we alone here in wondering “What the hell is an Abarth?” No? Good. This commercial is probably the sexiest thing we’ve ever seen during the Super Bowl that didn’t feature Adriana Lima. The actual product their promoting? Not so much. Seriously, that’s one ugly car.

Smash – 2012 – Promo

smash

We actually watched an early preview of the pilot episode, and you know what? It was pretty darn good. Whether you love or hate musicals and singing and dancing… actually, if you hate musicals then you’ll probably hate this. But still, the acting and the story are compelling.

Chrysler – 2012 – It’s Halftime in America

chrysler

Clint Eastwood lends his voice and his face to this 2-minute-long inspirational tribute to America’s spirit. Something about this one rings much more authentic than last year’s ode to Detroit featuring Eminem, though maybe we just like Clint better. It’s nice to take 120 seconds and really appreciate the message being delivered.
