NFL Fantasy Million Dollar Fan – 2012 – Promo

nfl

The NFL apparently has an inflated concept of just how much $1 million can get you these days. We’re not millionaires, but we’re pretty sure you can’t bathe in gold coins on a million-dollar budget.

Swamp People – 2012 – Promo

swamp people

Our first thought on this promo is: “Why is this on the History Channel?” Then we wondered why they mixed up all of their metaphors so badly. The boots are Wingtips, the Sun is a lightswitch? Got it. So how can the gator be your 401(k) and your boss? And why are the fishing poles your IT?

Prudential – 2012 – Day One: Linda Gutherie

prudential

It must be hard to make a commercial that actually tries to deliver an important message, and then try to get it noticed amidst all the noise and chaos that the Super Bowl commercial field has become. This one is quiet and meaningful, with an important message for people about to retire, and nobody watched it.

Samsung Mobile USA – 2012 – Thing Called Love

samsung

This one is odd: the first 20 seconds are hilarious, then it turns into some kind of Glee music-video reject, then at the end it almost redeems itself with a self-referential joke. We’re going to chalk this one up as a success, simply for the 30-second edit we see it eventually becoming.

NBC – 2012 – Crank

Wow, we can’t decide if this is just not very funny or totally offensive. Since we’re not… of whatever descent the people in this spot are supposed to be, we suppose we should just not be offended, forget to laugh, and move on with our lives.

CareerBuilder – 2012 – Business Trip

They’re back folks, and we welcome them with open arms. While we’re all for treating animals kindly and with dignity, we can’t help but disagree with PETA on this one: these chimps look like they’re have a ball, and given the choice we’re sure they’d opt to be in the ad rather than sitting in a zoo or flight simulator somewhere.

Kia Optima – 2012 – A Dream Car. For Real Life.

Get ready for the most epic, jaw-dropping car commercial that you’ve seen in your entire life. Adriana Lima, Motley Crue, and 100-foot hoagies being sawn in half by hirsute lumberjacks all come together in a manly orgy of fast driving and loud music.

Time Warner Cable – 2012 – Enjoy Better

time warner

This spot starts off very strong and very promising, with the hilarious Ricky Gervais cruising his Facebook friend requests. Despite numerous other guest stars and that great opening scene, the rest of it devolves into a typical “our cable service is awesome” commercial. Missed opportunities.

Bud Light – 2012 – Rescue Dog

bud light

This starts off slow but manages to pick up steam by the end. We kind of felt sorry for the little dog though… someone should seriously call animal control on his jerk of an owner. If that’s not animal abuse, then we don’t know what is. Maybe we just don’t know what animal abuse is.

Act Of Valor – 2012 – Movie Trailer

This upcoming film apparently stars active-duty US navy Seals, which seems somehow impossible but we’ll take their word for it. The plot sounds particularly boring and formulaic, though so did the plot for Chain Reaction, and that turned out great! Opens this month.

MetLife – 2012 – Everyone

metlife

MetLife takes their Peanuts spokespeople and shoe-horns in every cartoon memory from the childhoods of 60% of the people watching the game, and that’s what you call market research, folks. If you think we’re going to buy insurance just because you put He-Man and Voltron in your commercial, then you are absolutely right.

Honda – 2012 – Matthew’s Day Off

honda

Honda has gifted us with a magnificent treasure this day, providing an extended version of their Super Bowl XLVI commercial featuring Matthew Broderick in an inspiring homage to his breakthrough role in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. As a point of reference, if they were to air the entire 2-and-a-half minute version on Sunday, it would cost them 17.5 million dollars in airtime alone.
