Budweiser Canada – 2012 – Flash Fans

The U.S. isn’t the only country to enjoy Super Bowl commercials. Budweiser Canada played the most kind-spirited prank on two amateur Canadian hockey teams, and treated them to a “flash-mob” of epic proportions. This spot will air during the Canadian Super Bowl broadcast, but we get to enjoy it here first!

The Best Super Bowl Ads Of The Past Ten Years

The Super Bowl enjoys a unique place in American television: when the commercials come on, people actually start paying more attention to the broadcast. Each ad slot is the most expensive and most-watched 30 seconds of television in the world (and let’s face it, probably the universe). Some companies pour their heart, soul, and several million dollars into 30 little seconds of time that might make or break their sales for the year.

The past ten years have been remarkable in terms of political, social, and technological change, and the Super Bowl ads reflect that. Let’s take a walk down memory lane at the past ten years of Super Bowl commercial history.

Budweiser – 2011 – Wild West

Arguably the most anticipated commercial of the afternoon, this spot in our opinion fell short. We were hoping for some real wild west action, but instead got handed an Elton John singalong in a wild west saloon. When Peter Stormare reaches for his sidearm we expect bullets to start flying, not “Tiny Dancer”. Oh well, it was pretty cute we suppose, but nothing even remotely close to releasing a teaser for.

Yeah, thanks for nothing Budweiser.

Sneak Peek At Super Bowl XLV Budweiser Ad

The Clydesdales are back this year at the 2011 Super Bowl, and they’ve offered us a short sneak peek at what’s in store. When we say short, we do mean short, because at only 17 seconds it’s not much. The preview sets the mood for a Wild West-themed story that involves horses, stagecoaches, scorpions, uh… sand and rocks… and we think, though we’re not positive, that it may involve beer. Budweiser, in all likelihood.

Budweiser – 1999 – Frogs Get Canned

This is yet another example (we’re getting kind of tired of Budweiser having all these great examples) of how you can make a commercial that has absolutely nothing to do with your product that actually does better than trying to sell your actual product. Did that make any sense? There’s even a little self-referential thing going on at the end when the lizard says “Now how is that supposed to sell beer?” By steering the narrative away from the quality issue, that’s how.

While this commercial is funny, well-written, and extremely well acted, those frogs are hands-down the most annoying advertising… things ever put on the air. We can’t say we were sad to see them go.

Budweiser – 1999 – Lobster

In what should win the award for Best Performance In A Comedy Or Musical By A Crustacean, this Budweiser commercial somehow manages to be funny while still having something remotely to do with the product being advertised. Our takeaway from this was actually that the lobster was a hero for removing even just one bottle of Bud from what looks to be a decent establishment, but we suspect that isn’t what the ad agency was going for.

Budweiser – 2004 – Clydesdale Donkey

As if you haven’t already had enough of those at times funny, at times regal, but always heartwarming Budweiser Clydesdales. This time there’s a cute little donkey that wants to be a Clydesdale too, but he can’t because he’s a donkey! I mean the spot practically writes itself, which is apparently what the folks at the Anheiser-Busch marketing firm thought too because they sure as hell didn’t put much effort into this.

Sorry, maybe the spot is just so sweet it puts us in sweetness overload, then comes out the other end as pure bitterness. Oh well, it’s a cute little ad that does the job, we suppose.

Budweiser – 2005 – Zoo Menagerie

We wish we could have been shown the other end of this already clever-enough commercial: the animals escaping from the zoo. Or circus, or Madagascar, or wherever. The kangaroo feigns illness to get the zookeeper in the habitat, then stomps him to death and tosses the keys to the elephant, the only animal in the commercial with the dexterity to open the rest of the cages.

Budweiser – 2006 – American Dream

Wow, this one is just, wow. Give us a minute.

This has to be one of Budweiser’s all time best commercials ever. Besides being a beautiful, heartwarming story told in sixty seconds, it’s an example of the reason why Budweiser is one of the top-selling beers in America. Say what you will about the quality of the draft itself, their marketing department understands that rather than just selling beer, they are selling an image.

Budweiser – 2007 – King Crab

Crabs worship a cooler full of Budweiser as if it were a giant crab, yet show enough common sense not to actually drink the stuff. Give them a few hundred generations and humanity may find itself on the wrong end of a crustacean revolution.

Budweiser – 2007 – Separated At Birth

Anyone with siblings knows the feeling of triumph when you kick their butts at something. This commercial has a hint of tragedy about it, though: whatever happened to the old woman that originally adopted the Budweiser puppy?

What we’re hinting at is that she’s dead. You know in your heart of hearts that we’re right.

Budweiser – 2007 – Dalmatian

The literal underdog comes out on top due to a chance encounter with some well-placed mud. You know he’ll be found out eventually and kicked back onto the streets, most likely dying alone in the harsh winter cold, which is what makes this story a true tragedy.
